New Jersey Hunter Education Requirements

All new hunters in New Jersey must successfully complete a hunter education course before they can obtain a New Jersey Hunting License. Those who have a previous year's hunting license may be exempt from this requirement*.

*If you lose your hunting or trapping license and have never taken a hunter education course you will have to take a hunter education course before obtaining a new license.

New Jersey Hunting License

A new Jersey Hunting License is required for anyone who hunts game within the state. Resident licenses are issued to hunters who have been residents of the state for at least 6 months at the time of the license purchase. Non-residents are also available. Fees for hunting and trapping licenses vary according to residency, age, game hunted, and other factors. For more information on the New Jersey Hunting License, consult with the Fish & Wildlife at dep.nj.gov/njfw/hunting/.

Minimum Age Requirements

A New Jersey Youth Hunting License is issued for free to anyone between the ages of 10 and 15. These licenses are valid until the hunter turns 16, at which point he or she must purchase a resident license at regular price. Youths 10 to 13 may only hunt if they hold a youth license AND they are accompanied by an adult aged 21 or older who also holds a valid NJ hunting license. Youths 14 and 15 may hunt without adult supervision.
